Radio-anatomical Studies on the Development of the Dental Arch of the Korean Fetus

Abstract
The radio-anatomical measurements on the various items, such as; the length, width of the upper and lower 1 dental arches have been studied on 210 cases (105 of male, and, 105 of female) of the Korean fetuses aged from the 5th month to the 10th month of the prenatal life. I
1. The four kinds of the types of the upper dental arch showed the frequency of occurrences as follows;
The rounded square type is the highest in 70%, the elliptical type is the second, the parabollical type is the third, and U-shaped type is the lowest. 2. The most common type of the lower dental arch was rounded square type in 60%, and the remaining were parabollical, elliptical and U-shaped types.
3. In the length of the maxillary dental arch, orale-canine length, canine-2nd molar length(1)¢¥ canine-2nd molar length (2), langth of dental arch (1) and length of dental arch (2) of the 5th month of the fetal age were 3.0, 11.5, 14.1, 17.1., 10.8 mm. , respectively.
These measurements increased regularly as the increase of the age of the fetuses. Finally at the last month in utero, the measurements were 1.8 times in orale-canine length, 1.2 times in canine-2nd molar length(1), in canine-2nd molar length (2) and in dental areh(i), 1.3 times in dental arch(2), as compared with the 5th month measurements.
4. In the width of the maxillary dental arch bicanine width, bifirst molar width, bisecond molar width, width of dental arch (1), and width of dental arch (2) in the 5th month of fetal age were 13.2, 15.2, 18.1, 23.4, 20.2 mm,. respectively.
These measurements increased regularly as the progress of the age of the fetuses. Finally at the last month in utero, the measurements were 1.8 times in bicanine width, 1.7 times in bifirst molar width, in bisecond molar width and in width of dental arch (2), 1.5 times in width of dental arch (1), as compared with the 5th month measurements.
5. In the length of the mandibular dental arch, orale-canine length, canine-2 nd molar length (1), canine-2 nd molar length (2), length of dental arch (1) and length of dental arch (2) of the 5 th month of fetal age were 0.5, 9.4, 13.4, 15.9, 9.1 mm., respectively.
6. These measurements increased regularly as the increased of the age of the fetuses. Finally at the last month in utero, the measurements were 6.6 times in orale-canine length, 1.5 times in canine-2 nd molar length (1), 11.3 tires in canine-2nd molar length(2,` and in length of dental arch(1), 1.4 times in length of dental arch, as compared with the 5th month measurements in the width of the mandibular dental arch, bicanine width, bifirst molar width, bisecond molar width, width of dental arch(1) and width of dental arch(2) of the 5th month of the fetal age were 13.2, 14.4, 17.1, 22.1, 20. imm., respectively.These measurements increased regularly as the progress of the age cf the fetuses. Finally at the last month in utero, the measurements were 1.6 times in bicanine width, 1. 7 times in bifirst molar width and in bisecond molar width, 1.6 times in width of dental arch(i) and in width of dental arch(2), as compared with 5thmonth measurements.
7. No significant data were found between the male and female.
